Excellent lens

I sold my 200-600 to upgrade to the 400-800, I’m very happy with the lens,the 800 end is nice and shape for my type of photography,which is locating birds nest. I’m not able to supply any images,due to the sensor of showing birds on nest.

Used the lens a few times and compared it to the 200-600G which is excellent. It's a bit heavier, a fraction longer and bigger but not overtly cumbersome. I can hand-hold it and swing it about quite easily for tracking flying birds. For someone less strong or of a smaller build, it might prove a challenge for prolonged use. You need a dedicated bag, something like the Vanguard Alta Sky 66 due to its size. AF is excellent - faster, more reliable and 'stickier'. The focus limiter at 8 meters to infinity appears to work at closer distances too and seems less fussy than the 200-600. Sharpness is better too. Colour rendition is excellent and typically natural like all modern Sony lenses. I've not yet tried it with my 1.4x convertor. It would be 5 out of 5. However, the equipment registration process via the internet is as usual with Sony, very, very poor. It's almost as if they don't want you to take out an extended warranty! The software doesn't use field updates from the same entries in previous forms. The font size is tiny with light grey text on a glaring white background! I can excuse the American address template but please, not everyone lives in a bloody city! In fact this very review form is a good example of how not to design a review form. Free text field too small, dark text on white background, no auto-update of email field etc.

I purchased the lens from B&H Photo Video of New York City NY. The lens did not come with case. Do you have a recommendation for a carrying case? Why does 100400GM cone with a case but the 400800G does not come with a case.?

Objektiv jsem zakoupil před měsícem a jsem maximálně spokojen. Je krásně ostrý na plně otevřenou clonu, ostří rychle a s dosahem 800mm lze zachytit i menší ptáky aby zaujmuli i větší část samotného snímku.

J'ai mis un peu de temps avant d'écrire cet avis car pendant quelques temps j'avais du mal à obtenir les photos voulues bien nettes avec mona7r4. Puis au fur et à mesure, l'habitude venant, je me suis mis à obtenir des photos d'un excellent niveau de netteté, j'ai retrouvé la netteté de mes photos prises à 600m avec mon 200-600mm, mais à 800mm ! La plage de focale est parfaite, centrée sur 600mm plus ou moins 200mm. L'interrupteur "full time DMF " est génial et très utile pour capturer le portrait de l'oiseau caché dans les branches. Pour finir, l'optique est assez lourde, mais je l'utilise quand même principalement à main levée.

Das was ich bisher mit dem Objektiv aufgenommen habe hat mich voll und ganz überzeugt. Im Wildlife Bereich ist es einfach fantastisch, das 200-600mm war schon sehr gut, aber das ist noch besser. Die Schärfe ist in allen Brennweiten exzellent, der Fokus ist sehr schnell und präzise, die Handhabung ist sehr einfach. Was mir auch sehr gut gefällt ist die Brennweite bis 1200 mm im APSC Modus an der A7 RV, da braucht man den Telekonverter nicht mehr und hat trotzdem sehr gute Fotos. An der A9 III ist es auch super Ich kann dieses Objektiv nur empfehlen wenn man eine große Brennweite braucht. Ich kann dieses Objektiv nur empfehlen

Sehr gute Abbildungsleistung. Auch bei Blende 8 gute Freistellung möglich. Das Gewicht ist keine Kleinigkeit. Ist aber bei dem Zoombereich auch klar. Beanbag und Einbeinstativ sollte man dabeihaben.

Hatte vorher das 200-600 und das 400-800 ist im Vergleich viel schärfer und ich bin extrem zufrieden. AF funktioniert ebenfalls einwandfrei. Man darf aber nicht vergessen, dass man bei f8 und 1/1000 sehr viel Licht braucht. Daher würde ich bei sich schnell bewegenden Motiven maximal 24MP Vollformat empfehlen, obwohl ich das Gefühl habe, dass dieses Objektiv auch besser mit entrauschen zurecht kommt. Videomacher können natürlich kleinere Pixel haben.

J'utilise le sel400/800g principalement pour de l'observation d'animaux à grande distance, avec un doubleur. C'est un bon objectif, mais je le trouve lourd ; pas facile de faire des photos de petits oiseaux en vols ; parfois je trouve que mes images faites avec mon sel200/600g de meilleurs qualités.

Telephoto for extreme reach and wildlife

Excellent,a really a nice choice for Sony users ,althought the aperture of F8 is limiting in some scenarios ,the convenience of the zoom with reach surpasses other telephoto zoom options ,and even some primes ,the lens is built with Sony's expertise so rest assured of high quality ,internal zoom assures good balance and fast zoom throw ,coupled with Sonys superlative XD linear motors insured fast focusing ,a step up from competitors,lens hood is well designed everything has a premium feel,there will times when you may need something shorter for your needs ,but for birding wildlife where you subject can be either small or distant this lens gives you opportunitys only the best primes could achieve ,kudos to Sony it has now replaced my 200-600mm Sony g lens ,as first choice .only the weight will be a limited factor for some people.

great lens sharp with fast AF

bought new had for a couple of weeks mainly for bird photography but i think would be great for airshows, bit heavier than the 200-600 but sharper. F8 not so great on those dull days in the UK but the last couple of weeks of sun have been great, no issues at F8 and at 800 mm backgrounds blur very well.

Habe auf genau diese Brennweiten-Kombi gewartet ! Ein Geniales Zoom. Wenn, dann richtig. Bin total begeistert von dem Angebot an Ausschnitt und SCHÄRFE in den schnell erreichbaren Zoomstufen. Die Blenden sollten heutzutage nicht mehr das größte Problem sein. Auch super, die abgeschlossene - und somit dichte - Objektivkonstruktion.

Bin sehr beeindruckt von diesem Objektiv, gerade was die Schärfe angeht. Hatte vorher das 200-600, da war ich mit der Schärfe nicht zufrieden. Die Blende 8 ist zwar nicht überragend aber mit den neuen Kameras, bezüglich nutzbare hohe ISO-Werte, gut nutzbar. Der Autofokus ist sehr gut, die Verarbeitung hochwertig und das Preis-Leistungsverhältnis stimmig. Insgesamt bin ich sehr zufrieden mit dem Objektiv.
