I purchased this lens to use on my Sony alpha A77 & A57 cameras and I am so pleased I did. The images I have taken are so crisp and sharp, the autofocus is so quick and more to the point silent, a great plus point when photographing wild life. Another great feature is the zoom range and the images are so good right through the zoom range. As my cameras have cropped sensors this give the equivalent of 105 to 600 mm lens. The only down side is I now need to save up for a body with a full frame sensor

I travelled 400 miles return trip to get this Lens as it was the only one in the UK, and did not want it Being bumped about in delivery, worth every penny in fuel. I some times use a third party converter with it and it holds at F8. WELL WORTH THE MONEY IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT.

Got to be my favourite lens, pin sharp, smooth fast auto focus and fantastic clarity. Replaced my faithful Minolta zoom for this with no regrets. Fabulous on my Sony a99ii and super long and just as good on my a77ii.

Objektiv hält was es verspricht. Viel Zoom, einfache Bedienung. Lediglich bei schlechten Lichtverhältnissen muss man Abstriche machen im Gegensatz zu durchgängigen Blenden.

I bought this lens to replace the mark 1 version that has given good service over the years from Svalbard to the Falklands and from Japan to Churchill. The new lens gives sharp results and good colour like the previous lens, but with improved autofocus speed. Here are a few photos with my new lens from a safari to the Masai Mara a week ago.

In den letzten 4 Wochen wurde das Objektiv ausgiebeig genutzt. Es hat sich bestens bewährt zum Freistellen von Portraits (auch Tierportraits). Die Schärfe ist sehr gut über den gesamten Brennweitenbereich.Die abnehmbare Stativgondel verbessert das Handling bei Freihandaufnahmen wesentlich, da die Bedienung des Fokusrings erleichtert und das Gewicht reduziert wird. Absolut scharfe und rauscharme Freihandaufnahmen gelingen in Verbindung mit der Sony Alpha 99 II in Auto ISO-Einstellung und Steady Shot auch bei schlechten Lichtverhältnissen. Sehr geringe chromatische Aberrationen treten nur in den äußersten Bildecken auf und können mit Lightroom schnell und vollständig entfernt werden. Gegenüber einem Minolta 80-200 mm G- Objektiv sind im relevanten Brennweitenbereich keine Qualitätsunterschiede erkennbar. Die Kunststoff-Sonnenblende ist etwas fragil - man wird sehen, wie lange sie der Verwendung mit der recht gewichtigen Linse standhält. Deshalb ein Punkt Abzug. Der Schieber zur Bedienung von Polfiltern ist jedoch sehr sinnvoll. Trotz des Punktabzugs: Absolute Kaufempfehlung aufgrund der optischen und mechanischen Qualität!

Although I haven't had time yet to extensively use and test my SAL 70–400mm F4–5.6 G SSM II, the test shots I have taken with my a99M2 and a77M2 show fantastic levels of sharpness and clarity with great colour and contrast. The lens also autofocuses when using my 3rd party, Kenko Pro 300 2x converter on the a99M2. As I mentioned I haven't used it extensively yet, but my only slight gripe is, I find the balance a little front heay at 400mm on the a99m2 with batterie pack/grip.

I own a number of Sony lenses that I am very happy with but eventually bought the lens I really wanted for wildlife (and other) photography. The build quality of this lens is very good. The auto focus is also very fast and quiet and the picture sharpness and quality gives you a professional grade super zoom lens. I would definitely recommend this lens to anyone wanting the best possible results.

ging in Erfüllung, der Wunsch nach längerer Brennweite führt stets zum SAL 70400G2 nur der hohe Preis schreckt vor dieser Investition ab jedoch verliert man nie die Lust auf dieses Objektiv. Nun ist es schon ein paar Wochen in meinem Besitz und ich habe nichts zubereuen. Scharfe Fotos, super schneller Autofokus sowie neidische Blicke, es gibt eben noch viele Wünsche nach diesem Objekt (iv) der Begierde. Mein Fazit, lieber etwas länger sparen und dann dreifache Freude.

schneller exakter Autofocus, mit der Möglichkeit zum nachregulieren bei schwierigen AF-Motiven wie Vögel im Geäst von Bäumen,sehr gute Schärfe und Abbildungsleistung; und auch bei aufgesetzter Gegenlichtblende kann man endlich mal den Polfilter einstellen. Für Rechtshänder alles in guter Griffnähe.

Definitely the best zoom lens currently on the market for Sony. The build quality is excellent. The focusing is very quick and much faster than its predecessor. The focusing is also silent due to the SSM motor. Thee focus and zoom rings is very smooth to operate. All the photos I have taken so far with the lens has been tack sharp. The IQ of photos taken on the lens is not far off from prime lenses if not identical. The lens will complement any Sony camera and works particularly well with hybrid focusing system of the new Sony Alpha 99II. The photo of the squirrel was at 80% quality and heavily cropped.

Habe das Objektiv als Ergänzung für die große Brennweite nach dem Wechsel aufs Vollformat gekauft und bin absolut zufrieden. Sehr schneller Autofokus, der präzise sitzt und eine hervorragende Bildqualität sind sehr überzeugend. Der Preis ist happig, aber im Vergleich mit anderen Herstellern auch nicht abgehoben.

Ich habe lange überlegt, mir das Objektiv zuzulegen, da es preislich schon in der oberen Liga spielt. Aber irgendwann kam ein Angebot, das ich nicht ausschlagen konnte. Ich habe den Kauf nicht bereut. Die Abbildungsleistung ist genial, die Farben sind klasse und die Motive wirken irgendwie plastisch (im positiven Sinne). Der Antrieb des Autofokus ist sehr flink und das Gehäuse wirkt sehr wertig und solide. Viele Details sind gut durchdacht (Bedienungsmöglichkeit eines Polfilters durch die Sonnenblende, Focus-Limiter, Focus-Stop, Stativschelle, ...). Auch das mitgelieferte Etui überzeugt mich total. Anständig gepolstert, wertig verarbeitet, leichtgängige Reissverschlüsse...

Ich habe mich für das SAL70400 G SSM II zu meiner SONY A7 II mit Adapter LA-EA4 entschieden, weil ich diesen großen Zoom Bereich benötige und es momentan nichts Vergleichbares für das E-Mount gibt. Mit diesem Ogjektiv bekommt man auch noch viel Masse für's Geld. Also dran denken: Auf einem längeren Trip kann es durchaus etwas ausmachen dieses Gewicht zu tragen. Da ich es mit dem Adapter LA-EA4 verwende spare ich mir eine Bewertung der AF Geschwindigkeit, hier spielt wohl der Adapter eine (leider negative) Rolle. Für mich spielt das nur eine untergeordnete Rolle, da ich im Telebereich eh lieber manuell fokussiere. Der Stativring hat einen Fuß zum Befestigen an einem Stativ, der leider etwas klein ausfällt. Zum Tragen ist er jedenfalls nicht geeignet, schade. Die Gegenlichtblende ist aus Kunststoff, was sie empfindlich macht, wenn man das Gewicht des Objektivs berücksichtigt. Es hat keinen OSS, was aber an der A7 II nicht ins Gewicht fällt, da die Kamera eine hervorragende Stabilisierung besitzt. Ansonsten hat es alle Features, die man von SONY G-Objektiven kennt: + Fokushaltetaste (finde ich sehr hilfreich) + Schönes Bokeh + Klasse Abbildungsleistung, auch bis an die Bildränder hin + Die Haptik ist wertig und lässt auf langen Gebrauch hoffen, das gilt auch für die Stativschelle aus Metall Für mich ein sehr gelungenes Objektiv, das ich gerne weiterempfehle.

Habe das Objektiv im Februar gekauft und es bisher nicht bereut. Es is mein erstes Objektiv aus der G Serie. Das einzige was ich zu bemängeln habe ist die fehlende Arretierung für den Transport.

Ich hab das Objektiv gerade mal 3 Wochen und konnte es noch nicht ausführlich testen. Die wenigen Fotos, die ich bis jetzt mit dem Objektiv gemacht habe, überzeugen mich als Hobbyfotograf vollends. Ich nutze das Objektiv an einer Alpha 77 Mark II und an einer Alpha 700.

Ich habe dieses Objektiv nun ca. 1 Monat. Die ersten Bilder sind gemacht mit meiner A77. Die Bilder sind scharf mit einem guten Kontrast. Bei "Freihandschüssen" ist das Gewicht schon gewöhnungsbedürftig. Das Fokussieren ist leise, fast nicht hörbar und was sehr guthast, man kann jederzeit manuell eingreifen ohne auf manuell um zu schalten. Das Scharfstellen im Nahbereich 1,5 -2m Abstand dauert, oft "pumpt" das Objektiv bei 400 mm, vor allem bei schlechten Lichtverhältnissen. Im Fernbereich über ca. 4 m ist der Focus schnell und sehr präzise auch bei Serienaufnahmen. Heutige Bewertung: alles in allem ein sehr gutes Objektiv, das sein Geld wert ist, trotz des rel. hohen Preises. Ich werde mich nochmals melden wenn ich mit diesem Objektiv mehr Erfahrung gesammelt habe.

Das SAL70400G2 macht an meiner A57, sowie an der A7R einen super Eindruck . Der Autofokus ist extrem schnell und treffsicher, sowie die Schärfe erstklassig. Einzige Nagativpunkte: - hohes Gewicht - durch das Scheuern an meiner Hose während der Nichtbenutzung (SunSniper) leidet der Lack etwas. Von mir aus - klare Kaufempfehlung!!

I purchased this lens to upgrade from my SAL70300G, and wow, what a difference! The 70-400 GII is fast and sharp even at the long end. It focuses nicely and can easily be used handheld as well as on a tripod. It is a pretty heavy lens, especially compared to the 70-300G I used before, but it's absolutely worth carrying that extra weight around.

Etant déjà le propriétaire d'un 70-300 G SSM première génération, j'ai souhaité investir dans un alpha 77 M2 et de ce super téléobjectif. J'ai déjà fais quelques photos , le rendu est formidable, objectif très rapide en mise au point, la qualité des images est formidable et les longueur focales sont très intéressante. Les seul point négatif sont son poids, assez lourd pour les randonnées pédestres et nécessite un trépied au delà de 300. Je suis vraiment content de mon acquisition

Je fais de la photo animalière. Comme SONY ne fait pas de 400mm fixe, je me suis rabattu sur le 70-400G. Je ne suis nullement déçu de cet investissement, la qualité de l'image étant excellente.

I do a lot of birds in-flight shots and am one of those who like to travel light without having to carry any pods with me. The lens is reasonably well built, compact enough and coping well on both static and dynamic shots throughout the zoom range while handheld. The focus is fast and sharp. It works extremely well with both A77V and A77 Mk2 when it comes to locking on and tracking a fast moving subject. A great lens to have and am glad that I bought it. One little nag is that the lens is not weather sealed and doesn't has a zoom barrel lock. Therefore, when you carrying it around with camera facing downward, the zoom barrel will slide out on its own. A risk of surface dusts being drawn back into the inner housing when the zoom is pulled back in. Sample images below were all taken handheld.

The lens looks good and is good. I find the auto focus very quick and effective even hand held and the lens is heavy. Not a lens to be carrying long distances hanging from your neck!! A dream to use on a tripod, very pleased with build and picture quality.

I used the original 70-400mm on a couple of occasions and received the new one as a Christmas gift from my father. The quality is sharp and focuses much faster then the original model. Even at 400mm the images come out sharp and crisp. The only complaint I have is there is no lock on the lens when your walking. It will zoom all the way out to 400mm so be prepared.

I bought this as a supplement to my 70-200 f2.8 to get extra."reach" for those distant subjects. I did wonder about the logic of owning two zooms with similar ranges but this lens is so sharp it rivals my 24-70 Sony Zeiss so I am certain it was a good idea. I don't think its been off my camera since I got it, it's that good!

Trotz des auffälligen Designs, das nach meinem Empfinden stark an Canon erinnert, und der für mich unpraktischen Anordnung von Zoom- und Schärfering kann ich mit dem verhältnismäßig schweren Objektiv gut umgehen und die hervorragenden Qualitäten auch ausnutzen wie z. B. die Zuverlässigkeit der Scharfstellung und die überragende Darstellung. Ein Traumprodukt, das seinen Preis wert ist; wieder ein Sonyprodukt, auf das man ohne Einschränkungen vertrauen kann.

I purchased this lens three weeks ago and have used it hand-held ever since. Despite the weight (although this is reasonable for this type of lens) I have had remarkably clear shots with nice bokeh. Expensive, but worth every penny, and adds a new dimension to my photography.

Brilliant Lens. If you want the best 70-400mm for your Sony Alpha camera buy this lens. Third party lenses are cheaper but no comparison in image quality, build and focus speed. A must if you have A77 mark 2 camera.

Schon die Vorversion war sehr gut. Das neue 70400/F4–5,6 G SSM II ist in zwei Punkten noch einmal verbessert: Schnellere Fokussierung und besseres Bouquet. Neben hervorragenden Fern-Aufnahmen eignet sich das Objektiv z.B. auch bei voller Brennweite zu Top-Aufnahmen von Libellen bei 1,5m Aufnahmeabstand. Ein wichtiger Kritikpunkt bleibt aber bestehen. Kein Wetterschutz im Vergleich zur Kamera SLT-A77 bzw. -77ii. oder Standardzoom Sony SAL 2.8/16-50

Bought this to put on my sony a77mkii camera, all in all I think this is as good as any canon combo, l compare it to the eos 7d with 100 - 400 L which I also have, would definitely recommend the sony combo as superb.
