Cracked Vaio Sony Screen

Hi there,

Even if you do search using the correct model number which should be around the screen bezel, you have to be careful which screen you order. Some laptops, especially Sony Vaios, will have a number of different screens that can fit each model and you have to order the correct one. Your best bet is to remove the screen and find out the screens part no which is allocated on the back of the removed screen. Once you have this you can order the correct screen. The screen has to be exchanged like for like otherwise it will not work!

If you have any problems, try ringing a screen supplier company. A lot of the time they are happy to advise and help you before purchase, just make sure they accept returns if they send you the wrong one..

I am not in any way suggesting you attempt to replace the screen yourself. If you feel comfortable doing this then by all means that is your choice, but if not I would fully recommend taking it too a professional.

Replacing the CPU fan will solve the problem. Very common cault with this range of laptops.

Hi Jenny,

I would try taking the lapop to another Wi-fi spot, such as a family or fiends house and try it there. If the problem is persisting at another location then you know its your laptop, if it doesn't then it something with regards to your network setup at home. Even though other computers are working, this doesn't take it out of the equation.

If it does persist at another location, I would try re-installing your wireless adapter drivers. If this doesn't prevail your possibly looking at a fault with your wireless card. A Sony laptop repairer can sort this out for you at a decent price.

Hi There,

To be honest with you, most laptops CPU fans will sound the same, so those two laptops fans are goind to sound quite identical unfortunatly.

With regards to fans in laptops, was this a new laptop that you were testing? I've never known them to be so loud that they are unbearable. They will alternate in sound with regards to what the laptop is being used for, how many programs you have running, what serface you are using the laptop on etc.

OK no problems.

If a screen is changed on the newer Sony Vaio's, you need to get the exact screen that has been taken out using the part number on the back of the screen. If you don't, you get this problem.

The dip switches are located under the keyboard so this will need removing to gain access to them. I think on the VPCEE theres about 4, so write down what position they are in to start with. Make sure the battery is removed when doing this by the way!

All you can do is try different combinations with the switches and hope that they work. Everytime you change them, plug the adapter in, power up, and if it doesn't work just remove the adapter and try a different combination.

Certain switches do different things and you will reaslise this when doing this that some need to be in a certain positions for the light to turn on, so its kind of logical.

Hi there,

On the new Sony Vaio VPCE series laptops, there are little dip switches on the motherboard, just under the keyboard. Sometimes if you have changed a screen in the laptop, these require altering a little. Make sure that you mark down the original settings before changing any of these.

It is also a common fault with the GPU on the VPCE series, causing a dim screen. It could be a problem that requires a new motherboard unfortunatly.

How long have you had the laptop? Because this kind of issue will be covered under the warranty.

Only option I can give you is to contact Sony

If these do not help you out, there are other places such as Ebay where you could find the item. You would need to locate a part number from the fan inside your machine and just search this model number on Ebay.

Hi,

Your best bet would be to go with the VPCF13M0E/B. Its the far more superior machine and the VPCF series are less prone to faults than the others.

The VPCF13M0E/B has an i7 processor, which from what I can see, is the best out of all those laptops mentioned above.

Hi. We've had this problem before. Sony were adament that it was software but it ended up being the motherboard that had to be changed. I believe to my knowledge (it was a while ago) it was the connection socket for the HDD.

Saying this it could be so many different things. Probably best taking it to a Sony Specialists repairer to get it checked.

On the Sony Vaio VPCE series laptops, the part number is usually on a little white label on the power socket cable. Saying that all VPCEC power sockets are the same, so if you just go onto Ebay or a similar site and search VPCEC "dc socket" or "dc jack" you should get some results. But a part number for this is 356-0101-6592_A or A1766509A.

Touch pad problem...

Hi there,

When you loose the touchpad, have you tried plugging an external USB mouse to the laptop? Try this and see if it works.

If it does, its either going to be a driver problem or a hardware problem I would have thought. Have a look on the Sony website if there are any drivers for your touchpad, if so re-install them. If there is no luck after this, I would have thought it may be your touchpad unfortunatly which would require changing. If it is less than a year old, it may be covered under warranty by Sony.

It does sound like it possibly may be something that you've installed such as a program or maybe an update.

A good thing to try would be if you remember the date that the laptop started to slow, try and restore the laptop to before this date. It is very possible that the laptop has taken badly to a large update, and a lot of the time, this works!

Hi there,

It is definatly the GPU chip. Very common fault on the VGN-AR's. Its the solder that they use on these GPU chips, the quality isn't nowehere near as good as on other models. It will require the GPU chip reballing. It isn't dust thats causing the problem.

There are other Sony Specialists repairers out there who will repair these things at a decent price if Sony decide not to help.

It is unfortunate that when paying for such an expensive product companies cannot offer a certain level of support.

Hi,

I would avoid compatible batteries for Sony Vaio's if a were you. You can pick up a used genuine Sony battery that has been tested and working perfectly fine for around £20 - £40.

You can use any battery that starts VGP-BPS13, the S just means that the battery is silver, and if there are any letters after the 13 and before the S, this is just a different powered battery.

Have a search on Ebay for VGP-BPS13 and keep an eye out for genuine Sonyu Vaio batteries.

Only way to be certain is to remove the screen, locate the screens part no and order using this part no.

This is the only sure way of ordering the correct screen for your specific machine.

That seems quite excessive!! Which laptop model is that?

Generally on Sony Vaio's, especially the newer vaio's, the audio sockets are on a seperate audio board and these cost nowhere near that value.

When taking it into a repairer, just make sure they know what they are doing with Sony Vaio laptops, otherwise they will have trouble getting a hold of the parts and charge you a fortune.

If you can tell me your model, I'll let you know how much you should be paying for a repair.

Hmmm ok, sounds a little fishy to me. The VPCEJ shares most of its parts with a VPCEA series laptop, except the motherboard, and I know a repair for one of those audio sockets should be around £100 maximum, if not less.

Have a look around! Find a repairer who specialise's in Sony Vaios.

Agreed. Apple are probably the worst for service and wanting to make the most money out of nothing. They aren't ones for being customer friendly. Saying this Sony are getting to the same standard unfortunatly.

Believe it or not, the best service comes from smaller brands, but you do get the draw back of a product that generally isn't as good.

When the laptop turns on as you say, can you here the fan and HDD working?

Have you tried plugging the laptop into an external monitor? That would be the first thing to do in this situation just to narrow down the search.

From what your saying your correct, it does sound like the graphics chip. Its the solder that they use on certain models, its very poor.

It isn't a seperate graphics card on your model, it is actually a graphics chip that is soldered to the board. It can be replaced by certain laptop repairers. Saying this, once it has been replaced the same thing can just happen again a few months down the line. Maybe think about a new laptop at this stage?

So I take it you've tried more than one disc?

I would personally say it sounds like you need a new optical drive. Its obviously still working to the extent of connectivety as it is spinning but its not reading the disc.

Ok well from what your saying it sounds as though the laptop is connecting to the router and is connected to your network, so your laptop seems to be working ok and doing its job What else do you have connected to the router? Can you connect to the internet using these other devices?

Its possible that its more down the line of the router rather than the laptop.

Hi,

I wouldn't have thought that it would work. Sony only make the 16v and 19.5v adapters and if they would work in place of each other then there would be no need to sell two different powered adapters. I'm not recommending it in the slightest but I can't see any harm trying when its a lower voltage. Its only when you try a higher voltage that theres a danger. The only thing that would happen is there wouldn't be any power.
