When in charge of managing a large scale shopping centre, ensuring the site is a safe and secure environment for both customers and retailers is of the highest importance.
One such site that has benefitted from an integrated surveillance solution from Sony is Palacio Do Gelo in Viseu, Portugal. One of the largest shopping centers in the country, Palacio Do Gelo occupies 175,00 square meters of retail space, allowing customers to enjoy over 200 shops and restaurants, a cinema, and a supermarket. With different activities taking place on the same site, and additional challenges such as striving to reduce the number of incidents of theft and anti-social behavior, the centre required a diverse range of products and applications, enabling the safety of thousands of visitors whilst satisfying the demands of a large-scale sophisticated retail environment.
Multi-functional monitoring
With an intelligent integrated solution that combines IP network cameras, corporate television, a public address system, and access control and detection systems; Sony have equipped the shopping centre with video surveillance, digital signage, and public address capabilities. It is the most advanced integration of surveillance and signage in Portugal to date – highlighting the flexibility of Sony technology to optimize a building’s internal IP network. The 200 IP cameras installed throughout the site range in functionality and have been appropriately selected depending on use.
The intelligent network cameras range from mini-dome, to fixed and pan-tilt zoom models, all of which are supported by Sony’s unique Distributed Enhanced Processing Architecture (DEPA) technology. The use of advanced DEPA technology allows Palacio Do Gelo to deploy high-performance IP monitoring networks and intelligent video analysis without overloading the existing IT infrastructure.
Using the multi-service IP network, all cameras throughout the centre – from small outlets to large-scale cinema screens – are centralised within one control room. All cameras are managed using Sony RealShot Manager Software, allowing images to be distributed over the network, in turn enabling near real-time analysis reports and a remote video-verification facility, ultimately providing an unrivalled accurate representation of activity in any given location across the site.
As part of the completion of a fully integrated surveillance system, Palacio Do Gelo is also now home to a large-scale digital sinage solution. Corporate television facilities have been introduced through the installation of 25 hard-wearing LCD screens, HD picture quality comes as standard, and all of which run Sony’s Ziris View Software, providing a centrally controlled networked communications platform.
